In Canada, we've seen a lot of negative footage about Russia vs gay people and their basic rights to live a normal life and be free to be. I have been shocked, disgusted, surprised, and perplexed about Russian government, police, and general population's pervasive anti-gay attitude we are seeing in the media.
This is the first time since i can remember where an Olympic country has not been highlighted in a positive light.... instead, there is a black cloud over these Olympics, and frankly, I'm so disgusted and put off by what I see happening in Russia. In this day and age of internet and availability of global communication, how can one major country be so miseducated about what defines gay people? to the point that there are anti-gay laws?
GAY PEOPLE ARE BEING BEATEN AND THE POLICE & GOVERNMENT ARE ON THE SIDE OF THE ONES DOING THE BEATING
Like any media, however, you can't judge an entire country or population by what we see. I have to believe that there are lots of people in Russia who disagree with the law, who see it as ridiculous and oppressive as we do, and who believe that gay people deserve the basic right to live peacefully and be themselves. Unfortunately, this is how the country has been portrayed...and I'm not a fan.
For the record, GAY does NOT equal PEDOPHILIA. How this belief came to be is beyond me. In fact, the top indicators of pedophelia are exactly the opposite... They are most often straight males who are married!
Does anyone know anyone in Russia who can give an insider perspective? Are any of you from Russia?
